Software Installation Guidelines
for OIT Public Computing Labs
- Only Duke faculty or staff can request that software be installed in the computer labs.
- Software installation requests are handled as they are received. Priority will be given to those requests that support the academic program.
- All software installed on computer lab machines must be site-licensed or licensed for a specific number of machines in the desired computer lab. OIT is unable to restrict software on Duke public computer labs to a specific set of Duke users.
- The software must be properly licensed by the owner of the software, which may be a department, OIT, or Duke.
- All requests will be considered based on the following factors: system security, performance, usability, reliability, and interference with other installed software programs.
- The software must be consistent with the platform-dependent system security model.
- Software to be installed must not interfere with the existing system architecture.
- The requesting department or instructor must be available for consultation with OIT staff on configuration issues.
- Different versions of the same software are considered separate software installations.
By submitting the software request installation form, I agree to the following terms and conditions for installing and removing software:
- I am responsible for testing the software package after it has been installed in the lab(s) to make sure it functions and prints the way I expect it to. (Please make sure you test this in the lab and not on your personal machine. It may function differently in a lab environment.)
- I understand that the turnaround time for software installations may take up to 10 business days.
- I am responsible for renewing software installations each academic term; otherwise the software may be removed.
- I verify that I am licensed to use the number of copies indicated on this form and I understand that this application will be accessible from the computers in the lab(s) in which the software is installed.
- I understand that OIT is not responsible for any supporting documentation and other materials that may reside in the computer lab(s).
- I verify that I have a licensed copy of the application on my office computer.
- If OIT does not support the application, I am responsible for arranging for support, and for informing OIT's Student Technology Services group and the users where they can receive support.
