Windows Vista Mail Secure Setup

1. Open Windows Vista Mail.

2. The Account Creation Wizard should start automatically. If it does not, follow these steps:

  1. At the top of the screen, click Tools.
  2. From the list of options, select Accounts.
  3. On the right side of the Internet Accounts window, click Add.
  4. Select Email Account. Click Next.

3. Enter your name on the first screen of the wizard. Click Next.

4. Enter your Duke email address in the format netid@duke.edu. Click Next.

5. From the Incoming email server type menu, select IMAP.

6. In the Incoming mail server field, enter imap.duke.edu.

7. In the Outgoing email server name field, enter smtp.duke.edu. Make sure the box labeled Outgoing server requires authentication is NOT checked. Click Next.

8. In the Email username field, enter your Duke NetID. In the Password field, enter your NetID password. Click Next.

Secure your account settings 

1. From the top of the screen, select Tools > Accounts.

2. Select your imap.duke.edu account. Click Properties

3. Click the Advanced tab.

4. For the Incoming mail (IMAP) server, select the box labeled This server requires a secure connection (SSL). For the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server, select the box labeled This server requires a secure connection (SSL) and than manually change the port to 587.

6. Click OK
