Dear Student,
Yesterday, your computer (00:00:00:00:00:00) sent 8.21 gigabytes of data to computers off campus. This is compared to the average of 0.02 gigabytes.
As we have previously indicated, OIT and the Duke Student Government have agreed to limit the per user bandwidth off campus to a maximum of 5 gigabytes per day. Because this machine has sent more than 5GB on four previous occassions, we will now be restricting its network bandwidth to 64kbps; approximately the speed of a dialup modem.
We encourage you to visit the following website and, if you have further questions, to contact the OIT Service Desk (684-2200) to identify the source of your high bandwidth usage. Often programs will run in the background and consume bandwidth without being readily apparent.
The website to help you identify sources of bandwidth usage is:
http://www.oit.duke.edu/helpdesk/filesharing
This restriction will be in place until the end of the current academic semester.
Sincerely,
Office of Information Technology
Duke Student Government
