Access Duke's Network and Secure Sites

What is a NetID?

A Duke NetID is a unique user ID assigned to each student that allows access to many resources at Duke. You will need your NetID to access your Duke email account, digital file storage, ACES Web  for registration and grades, Blackboard for course information, DukePass, your Duke-issued Web space, computer labs, and much more.

Receive and Activate Your NetID

Your NetID will be mailed to you in a letter.  If you do not receive your letter within 10 days of receiving the welcome packet of information from Duke, please contact the OIT Service Desk at (919) 684-2200.  Your letter will instruct  you to active your NetID online. NetID will be in your NetID letter. Make sure to choose a strong password, since you'll use your NetID to access personal and sensitive information. Never share your password!

Accessing the Duke Network

Duke provides free Internet access for all students on campus.  To access Duke’s free Internet you must register your computer on the network.  Once you get to campus, simply start a browser, follow instructions to register and restart your computer.

Wireless

Wireless access points are available in a growing number of classrooms, the libraries, and in some recreational facilities, as well as in many residence hall common rooms.  Effective fall 2008, all campus residence hall rooms will have wireless service.  Your laptop should support 802.11g, 802.11a, or 802.11n to access Duke's wireless network; an adapter with 802.11a/b/g/n support will provide the fastest service.  Please do not bring personally owned wireless access points/routers to campus as they will impair the performance of Duke's wireless network.  Check out the coverage list and maps website to see the latest coverage.

Ethernet

Each dorm room has one wired Internet/network (Ethernet) connection for each student.  You will need an Ethernet cable to connect your computer to the Internet using the wired connection in your room.
