Duke offers faculty and staff several solutions for making long distance calls for business, whether at your office or hundreds of miles from your desk. Long distance calls can be made from on-campus with a long distance authorization code, and charges are tracked and automatically billed to your department. For making long distance calls away from your office, Duke offers calling cards. Rates and information on international calling and 900 numbers is also available.
Many lines on and off campus are programmed for use with long distance authorization codes. Without a code, a long distance call cannot be placed from these lines. Business managers may use authorization codes within their departments to help track long distance expenses according to individuals, projects, or grants. OIT can send the monthly statements for each authorization code to the individual responsible or to the business manager. To order an authorization code, please call 919-684-2200, Option 3.
Follow the steps below to place a long distance call.
From a line programmed for authorization codes
From a line not programmed for authorization codes (excluding pay phones)
For Duke customers who need to place long distance calls while away from work, OIT issues Verizon calling cards. Before you travel internationally, call Verizon (800-483-9500) to verify you'll have service in that location, and read about how to place an international call while overseas. If Verizon service is not available where you'll be traveling, OIT can issue an AT&T calling card.
Using a Verizon calling card within US/Canada
When calling to or from an international location, it's necessary to have the correct city and country codes. AT&T's International Dialing Guide is designed to help you find the codes you need. When dialing internationally from the US/Canada, always dial 011 before the country and, if necessary, the city code.
To minimize fraudulent telephone usage, all Duke lines are restricted from dialing 900 numbers. If you require access to a 900 number (some legitimate customer service numbers begin with 900), please send e-mail to OIT and tell us the line(s) you need unrestricted. By doing so, you (and your department) agree to accept all 900 charges billed to the line.
