To get started with computing at Duke, you need to connect to Duke's high-speed computing network, DukeNet. DukeNet connects you to campus resources and the Internet. You can connect to DukeNet from your dorm room via Ethernet, from a wireless device, or from off campus (remote access) through an Internet Service Provider.

Connect to DukeNet via Ethernet

Every dorm room and on-campus apartment is wired for Ethernet access to DukeNet. To use DukeNet via Ethernet, do the following:

  1. Using an Ethernet cable, connect your computer's Ethernet port to the black Ethernet jack in your room.
  2. Follow the instructions for connecting to DukeNet via Ethernet for your computer.
  3. Register on the network.
  • The registration process (referred to as NetReg) begins automatically the first time you connect to DukeNet and open a Web browser. An online registration form will appear, stating the Duke policy on computing security and privacy. Read the policy and click the green Enter button at the bottom of your screen.
  • Enter your NetID and password to get to the NetReg site.
  • Click Simple Registration. As the instructions state, wait 2 minutes, then reboot your computer. You won't need to register again until the following semester.

Connect to the wireless network

Duke provides wireless access to DukeNet from many areas around campus. The wireless network allows you to connect your wireless device (laptop, PDA, etc.) to DukeNet without an Ethernet cable. This allows laptop or other wireless device users to gain access to the Internet while in some classrooms, in the library, and in many common areas.
