First, you must have a valid account to use the cluster. If you are unable to login to the machines, contact hpc-support@duke.edu to find out what is needed to gain access. If you have been granted access, then you can login with your NetID.
The cluster machines are running the Linux operating system, a Unix-like system. If you are familiar with any Unix operating system, then you will find Linux to be very familiar. It was basically designed to mimic those "industrial strength" Unix systems.
User home directories are mounted on all machines, so all data files are visible from all machines.
ALL access to the cluster must be through ssh. Files MUST be transferred using scp or sftp. Note that for large file transfers, you should scp or sftp files directly to cstore1.csem.duke.edu rather than going through the other head nodes.
