Client Access Licenses (CALs)

Duke has an agreement with Microsoft that offers Windows Server Client Access Licenses (CALS) that cover all faculty, staff and students at Duke. Departments running Windows servers are no longer required to purchase individual Client Access Licenses for Duke use.

This agreement does not cover licensing for Windows operating systems or Windows Server software – it only covers Client Access Licenses. Departments must continue to purchase Windows operating systems and Windows Server software through the Duke Computer Store's Select Licensing.

Also, this agreement does not cover Client Access Licenses for other Microsoft products. For example, Client Access Licenses for Microsoft Terminal Services are not included in this agreement.
