Setting up a streaming account at Duke
The Office of Information Technology's (OIT) Streaming Media Hosting service features two new servers. realmedia.oit.duke.edu is running Real's latest Helix Universal Server software, and quicktime.oit.duke.edu is running the latest version of Apple Computer's QuickTime Streaming Server.
Streaming services are available to the following Duke affiliates:
- faculty
- staff
- students (via a faculty or staff sponsor)
- departments
- schools
- other units across Duke
Departmental or unit accounts require a primary "gatekeeper" who is responsible for requesting the account and for determining who else has access to the unit's streaming directory.
Once an account is created, customers will have access to transfer securely via SFTP their encoded video files to a specified directory on the server that maps to a specific URL. Access to upload or manage files on each server can be restricted via a single username and password per directory.
To request an account, follow these simple steps:
- Contact the OIT Help Desk (919.684.2200).
- Explain that you would like a "New Streaming Media Account."
- Provide a brief description of how the account will be used.
- Specify a one-word name for your top-level streaming directory (letters and numers only--no special characters).
- Specify who will be the "gatekeeper" for this account, and the NetID of that person
- Specify any additional NetIDs that need permission to access the account
Please allow 3 business days to receive confirmation on your account request.
