Outlook 2003 SMTP Secure Settings

For Current Users

  1. Open Outlook
  2. Select the Tools menu and select E-mail Accounts.

  3. Choose View or Change existing e-mail accounts and click Next.
  4. Highlight your Duke account and click Change.

  5. On the E-mail accounts screen, make sure smtp.duke.edu is listed as the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP).

  6. Click on More Settings.
  7. Select the Outgoing Server tab.

  8. Check the box for My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
  9. Choose the radial button for Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
  10. Select the Advanced tab.

  11. Under Incoming server (IMAP), check the box labeled This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
  12. Ensure that the port number changes to 993.
  13. Under Outgoing server (SMTP), check the box labeled This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
  14. Change the port number to 465. (It will not change automatically)
  15. Click OK.
  16. Double-check the information in the following box and click Next.
  17. Click Finish and restart Outlook.
