Classroom Applications

Using the iPod's photo functionality has many applications for teaching and learning. From a teaching perspective, the iPod can be used to store exported JPEG slides from a Powerpoint presentation and displayed through the classrooms A/V system. Images can also be used to learn and study by creating a digital flashcard system and viewing these on the iPod. For example, if you are in an Art History class, you can load images of various pieces of art to help study.

How to Load images onto your iPod (PC or Mac)

  1. Create a folder somewhere on your computer that you will use as your iPod Images folder.  This is where you will copy all of your images that you want to import to your iPod.
  2. Copy photos into this folder, or create subfolders (albums) within this top folder and place photos in these subfolders.
  3. Plug in your iPod, and in iTunes 7, click on your iPod in the source menu, and then click the Photos tab at the top of the subsequent page. In previous versions of iTunes, go to Preferences > iPod > Photos.  Click the check box next to “Synchronize Photos from:”.  In the drop down menu after Synchronize Photos From, select “Choose Folder.”  Navigate to your main iPod Images folder and click OK.
  4. If you want to synchronize all photos in all subfolders of the main iPod Images folder, choose “Copy All Photos.”  If you would only like to synchronize certain subfolders, choose “Copy Selected” and select which folders you would like to synchronize.
  5. Click the checkbox “Include Full-Resolution Photos” if you would like iTunes to copy the full size photos onto the Hard Drive portion of your iPod.  This will allow you to transfer your photos to another computer for editing, etc.

How to Load images onto your iPod from iPhoto (Mac only)

  • Instead of placing your photos into a main folder and subfolders, just organize your photos in iPhoto by albums.  Then, in iTunes, instead of selecting “Choose Folder” in the iPod Photos Preferences pane, select “iPhoto Library.”  You can then choose to synchronize all photos or selected albums.

How to Load images onto your iPod from Photoshop Album Starter Edition (Windows only)

  • Instead of placing your photos into a main folder and subfolders, organize them into collections in Photoshop Album.  Then, in iTunes, instead of selecting “Choose Folder” in the iPod Photos Preferences pane, select “Adobe Photoshop Album.”

Notes:

  • To use iPhoto to synchronize your photos, you must have version 4.0.3 or higher.
  • This is a synchronization process, so if you have previously synced your iPod to a different folder of images, the re-sync will replace everything you’ve previously synced with the current folder.
  • Types of files that can be displayed:
    1.
      • Mac – jpg, jpeg, tiff, pict, gif, png, jpg2000, jp2, psd, sgi, bmp
