iPod 101 > Getting started

What do I need to do when I first get my iPod?

When you get your iPod, you should first install the iPod software on your computer and make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed as well. Next, connect your iPod to your computer and complete the setup process as prompted.

Note for Mac users: If you plan to use your iPod on multiple machines, such as classroom or lab computers, you should use a Windows computer the first time you connect your iPod. If you set your iPod up on Windows, you will be able to connect it to either Windows or Mac machines in the future; however if you format it on a Mac, it will only be usable with other Macs.

How do I learn about my iPod's features?

Play around, attend a DDI training session, and explore one of Apple's many how-tos and tutorials. The iPod Fast Start: New User's Guide to iPod is a good place to begin.

What training does Duke offer?

DDI is offering a variety of training options for students and faculty. Check out our training page for more information.

What kind of warranty do I have?

The iPods faculty and students will receive in the 2006-2007 academic year come with a one-year AppleCare warranty, which includes parts and labor and, for the first six months, free shipping. In the second six months, shipping is paid by the user. Extended warranties are available, with the cost borne by the user. Faculty whose iPods break while they’re under the initial warranty can get a backup from the OIT Help Desk. More information can be found online at http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/ipodisight.html.

Warranties for iPods received in previous semester vary according to the date the iPod was purchased. To find out if yours is still under warranty, you can input your iPod's serial number on the Apple iPod Service page (look for the Support Coverage section).
