Duke NetID Information

What NetID users need to know

A Duke NetID is an electronic alphanumeric identifier that authenticates users to systems and services on the Duke computing network. A NetID – used in combination with a strong password – proves to online resources you have been authorized to access that you are who you say you are.

Your individual NetID is assigned access privileges according to your role at Duke (faculty, staff or student). However, having a NetID does not automatically give you access to certain systems and services. Access is defined and provided by the service provider or system adminstrator. In some cases, you will need to apply for access to a specific system or service.

All faculty and students and most staff members have assigned NetIDs. Students are automatically assigned one upon matriculation. Faculty and staff have one once their records are created in Duke’s Human Resources database or once OIT receives a request on your behalf from a Duke sponsor (regularly paid Duke staff member).

Your NetID is not to be confused with your Unique ID, which is a seven-digit numeric identifier used for administrative record-keeping at Duke. Your NetID identifies you to systems and services provided through the Duke computing network.

If you are not sure what your NetID is, please contact the OIT Service Desk at (919) 684-2200 or the DHTS Help Desk at (919) 684-2243.

Faculty and Staff

Most regularly paid staff at Duke have a NetID. If you are not sure what your NetID is please contact the OIT Service Desk at (919) 684-2200 or the DHTS Help Desk at (919) 684-2243.

Your NetID is not required for all online resources. For example, some Health System applications or departmentally controlled resources use their own authentication systems. Your departmental computer systems administrator can assist you with non-NetID authentication.

Students

You are automatically assigned a NetID upon matriculation. With your NetID, you have access to central email and server space, ACES Web (registration, grades, billing), computer labs throughout campus, and specific course information (Blackboard).

NetID resources and access

Following are some common computing resources that require a NetID. If you are not sure whether you have access to these resources, contact either the OIT Service Desk at (919) 684-2200 or the (919) DHTS Help Desk at 684-2243.
