Connecting to DukeNet via Modem

Mac OS X

The DukeNet modem pool (681-4900) provides you with a connection to DukeNet of up to 15 minutes, and will disconnect you after a period of inactivity. If you need to connect for longer periods, see our Internet access for Duke affiliates page.

Before you begin

To connect to DukeNet using these instructions you must have:

  • An installed modem
  • Macintosh OSX
  • A Duke NetID and password

Configure TCP/IP

1. In the OS X program doc, click System Preferences.

2. In the System Preferences window, click Network.

3. In the Network window, from the Show list, select Internal Modem.

4. On the TCP/IP tab, from the Configure list, select Using PPP.

5. Click the PPP tab.

6. Do the following:

  • In the Service Provider box, type DukeNet.
  • In the Telephone Number box, type 681-4900.
  • In the Account Name box, type Default.
  • Click PPP Options.

7. In the window that will appear, under Session Options, click to select Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications.

8. Under Advanced Options, check the following boxes:

  • Send PPP echo packets
  • Use TCP header compression
  • Connect using a terminal window (command line)

9. Click OK.

10. In the Network window, click Apply Now.

11. Close the Network window.

Connect to DukeNet

Your connection to DukeNet will be established when you start any network application. To connect to DukeNet:

  1. Start the desired application (for example, Internet Explorer). The modem automatically will dial and the Terminal window will appear.

  2. At the prompt, type your Duke NetID and press ENTER.
  3. At the prompt, type your password and press ENTER.
  4. At the command prompt, type ppp and press ENTER.
  5. Click Continue.
