Connecting to DukeNet via Modem

Windows 2000

The DukeNet modem pool (681-4900)  provides you with a connection to DukeNet for up to 15 minutes, and will disconnect you after a period of inactivity. If you need to connect for longer periods, see our Internet access for Duke affiliates page.

Before you begin

To connect to DukeNet using these instructions, you must have:

  • Windows 2000
  • An installed modem
  • A Duke NetID and password

To verify that your modem is installed properly :

  1. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel, double-click Phone and Modem Options.
  3. Click the Modems tab. Your modem should be in the list of installed modems. If it is not, you must install your modem. Consult your Windows 2000 manual or contact the OIT Help Desk.

Configure a network connection

1. Select Start > Settings > Network and Dial-Up Connections > Make New Connection. The Network Connection Wizard will appear.

2. Click Next.

3. In the following window, select Dial-Up to private network and click Next.

4. In the following window, in the Phone number box, type 681-4900 and click Next.

5. In the following window, select For all users and click Next.

6. The next window is shown below. In the blank box, type DukeNet 15min.

7. Click Finish.

Configure connection properties

1. In the Connect to DukeNet 15min window, click Properties.

2. Click Configure.

3. In the Modem Configuration window, click to clear the Enable modem error control and Enable modem compression check boxes.

4. Click OK. 

5. In the DukeNet 15min window, click the Security tab.

6. Under Interactive logon and scripting, click to select the Show terminal window check box.

7. Click the Networking tab and verify that the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and Client for Microsoft Networks check boxes are selected.

8. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties. 

9. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, do the following:

  • Select the Obtain an IP address automatically option.
  • Select the Obtain DNS server address automatically option.

10. Click OK.

11. In the DukeNet 15min window, click OK.

12. In the Connect to DukeNet 15min window, click Cancel.

Connect to DukeNet

1. Before using any network applications, you must connect to DukeNet. To connect:

2. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel.

3. Double-click Network and Dial Up Connections. 

4. In the next window, double-click DukeNet.

5. In the Connect DukeNet window, click Dial.

6. In the Post-Dial Terminal window, at the prompt, type your Duke NetID and press ENTER.

7. At the prompt, type your password and press ENTER.

8. At the command prompt, type ppp and press ENTER.

9. Click Done. The Connected to DukeNet 15min window will appears. You may now use any network application.
