Connecting to DukeNet via Modem

Windows XP

The DukeNet modem pool (681-4900) provides you with a connection to DukeNet for up to 15 minutes, and will disconnect you after a period of inactivity. If you need to connect for longer periods, see our Internet access for Duke affiliates page.

NOTE:  These instructions are based on the Windows XP default menu.

Before you begin

To connect to DukeNet using these instructions, you must have:

  • Windows XP
  • An installed modem
  • A Duke NetID and password

To verify that your modem is installed properly :

  1. Select Start > Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections.
  3. Under see also, click Phone and Modem Options.
  4. In the Phone and Modem Properties window, click the Modems tab. Your modem should be in the list of installed modems. If it is not, you must install your modem. Consult your Windows XP manual or contact the OIT Help Desk.

Configure a network connection

1. Select Start > Control Panel.

2. In the Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections.

3. Under pick a Control Panel icon, click Network Connections.

4. In the New Connection Wizard window, click Next.

5. On the Network Connection Type page, select Connect to the Internet and click Next.
6. On the Getting Ready page, select Setup my connection manually and click Next.
7. On the Internet Connection page, select Connect using a dial-up modem and click Next.
8. On the Connection Name page, in the ISP Name box, type DukeNet 15 min and click Next.

9. On the next page, in the Phone Number box, type 681-4900 and click Next.

10. On the Internet Account Information page, do the following:

11. In the Network Connections window, under Network Tasks, click Create a new connection.

12. In the User name box, type your Duke NetID.

13. In the Password and Confirm password boxes, type your password.

14. Click to clear the check boxes indicated below.

15. Click Next.

16. On the Completing the New Connection Wizard page, click to select the Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop check box and click Finish.

Connect to DukeNet

1. To connect to DukeNet:

2. From the desktop, click DukeNet 15 min (or select Start > Connect to > DukeNet 15 min).

3. In the Connect DukeNet 15 min window, in the User name box, type your Duke NetID.
4. In the Password box, type your password.
5. Click Dial.
