Internet Explorer for dial-up users

  1. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
  2. Click the Connections tab.
  3. Click on your ISP in the Dial Up Settings list.
  4. Click on the Settings button (right of the Dial Up Settings list).
  5. Make sure Use a proxy server is selected.
  6. Click the Advanced button.
  7. Complete the fields as indicated :
  FTP PROXY: ftp-proxy.duke.edu PORT: 8080
  GOPHER PROXY: gopher-proxy.duke.edu PORT: 8080
  HTTP PROXY: http-proxy.duke.edu PORT: 8080
  SECURITY/SSL PROXY: https-proxy.duke.edu PORT: 8080
  1. Click OK to save your preferences.

Internet Explorer for broadband users

  1. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
  2. Click the Connections tab.
  3. Under the header of Local Area Network Settings, select LAN Settings....
  4. Under the header of Proxy Server, check Use a Proxy Server and select the Advanced button.
  5. Complete the fields as indicated:
  FTP PROXY: ftp-proxy.duke.edu PORT: 8080
  GOPHER PROXY: gopher-proxy.duke.edu PORT: 8080
  HTTP PROXY: http-proxy.duke.edu PORT: 8080
  SECURITY/SSL PROXY: https-proxy.duke.edu PORT: 8080
  1. Click OK three times to save your preferences.

Internet Explorer for OS 9.x:

Internet Explorer for Mac OS 9 uses the same steps for dial-up or broadband.

  1. From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  2. Click on Proxies under Network.
  3. Select the Web Proxy box. Make sure Use Web Proxy for all and Bypass Web Proxy for FTP are NOT selected.
  4. To the right of the Web Proxy field, click Settings. Fill in the below and click OK:

    Address: http-proxy.duke.edu
    Port: 8080

  5. Select the Secure Proxy box, and click Settings. Fill in the below and click OK:

    Address: https-proxy.duke.edu
    Port: 8080

  6. Select the Gopher Proxy box, and click Settings. Fill in the below and click OK:

    Address: gopher-proxy.duke.edu
    Port: 8080

  7. Click OK to save your settings.

Internet Explorer for OS 10.x

Internet Explorer for Mac OS 10.x uses almost the same steps regardless of whether you use dial-up or broadband.

  1. From the Quick Launch bar, select System Preferences.
  2. Click Network.
  3. If you have dial-up service, choose Internal Modem from the Show menu. If you have broadband service choose Built-in Ethernet from the Show menu.
  4. Select the Proxies tab.
  5. Select the FTP Proxy box. Complete the fields as indicated:

    ftp-proxy.duke.edu
    Port: 8080

  6. Select the Web Proxy box. Complete the fields as indicated:

    http-proxy.duke.edu
    Port: 8080

  7. Select the Secure Web Proxy box. Complete the fields as indicated:
    https-proxy.duke.edu
    Port: 8080

  8. Select the Gopher Proxy box. Complete the fields as indicated:

    Port: 8080

  9. Click Apply Now to save your settings. Close the System Preferences Screen.
  10. Open Internet Explorer.
  11. From the Explorer menu choose Preferences.
  12. Click on Proxies under Network..
  13. Make sure Use Web Proxy for all and Bypass Web Proxy for FTP are NOT selected. To the right of Web Proxy choose the Settings button. Verify that the following information is on this screen and click OK.

    Address: http-proxy.duke.edu
    Port: 8080
    User Name: your NetID
    Password: your NetID Password
  14. Choose the box for Secure Proxy. To the right of Secure Proxy choose the Settings button. Enter the following information on this screen and click OK.

    Address: https-proxy.duke.edu
    Port: 8080
    User name: your NetID
    Password: your NetID Password

Safari

Safari uses almost the same steps for dial-up services or broadband.

  1. From the Quick Launch bar, select System Preferences.
  2. Click Network.
  3. If you have dial-up service choose Internal Modem from the Show menu. If you have broadband service choose Built-in Ethernet from the Show menu.
  4. Select the Proxies tab.
  5. Select the FTP Proxy box. Complete the fields as indicated:

    ftp-proxy.duke.edu
    Port: 8080

  6. Select the Web Proxy box. Complete the fields as indicated:

    http-proxy.duke.edu
    Port: 8080

  7. Select the Secure Web Proxy box. Complete the fields as indicated:

    https-proxy.duke.edu
    Port: 8080

  8. Select the Gopher Proxy box. Complete the fields as indicated:

    gopher-proxy.duke.edu
    Port: 8080

  9. Click Apply Now to save your settings. Close the System Preferences Screen.
