from Off Campus
Downloading and installing
the Windows VPN client
You will need a NetID to download the client.
- Download the VPN client for Windows.
- Extract the files from the archive.
- Open the extracted folder and run vpnclient_setup.exe.
Configuration and use
Steps for installing the Duke University VPN client version 5.
- Right-Click on the file labeled vpnclient_win_5.zip, and select "Extract." Make note of where you are extracting the files to, as you will next need to run the setup file from that folder.
- Find the vpnclient_setup file in the extracted folder and double-click on it.
NOTE: There are five files named vpnclient_setup. You will need to click on the executable file. If you are unsure which file this is you can right-click on the file and select Properties. The file name will be vpnclient_setup.exe
These two steps apply only if you are upgrading from an older version of the VPN client.
1. You will be prompted that an existing version has been installed previously, and asked if you want to remove it. Click Yes to continue with the setup.
2. Next you will see a dialog box asking you to restart your computer so the new client can be installed. Choose Yes, then click Finish.

- At the Installshield Wizard for Duke VPN Client, click Next to begin the installation.
- On the next screen, click Yes to agree to the license agreement.
- Click Next unless you want to change the default directory where you want the program installed. If you want to change the directory, browse to the correct location, then click Next.
- Click Next to proceed with the installation.
- Select Yes, I want to restart my computer now, then click Finish.
NOTE: You must restart your computer before you will be able to use the VPN Client.
- After the machine has restarted, click on Start > Programs > Duke University Duke VPN Client and choose Duke VPN Dialer.

- Choose your connection from the list.
- If you have cable Internet service or DSL, use duke-broadband.
- If you are connecting through a wireless router, use duke-broadband.
- If you are using a dial-up Internet Service Provider, choose duke-dialup.
- For a secure and encrypted connection on campus, you can use duke-wireless.

- Enter your NetID and password in the login box, and click OK. You will see a yellow padlock icon in the system tray next to where the time is displayed.

- You are now connected to the Duke University VPN Client.
