Learn IT online with Lynda.com pilot
November 03, 2009
Duke’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) is making it even easier to learn the latest technological tools anytime, anywhere.
Starting this month, Duke users can access free video tutorials on a variety of technology topics directly from the OIT site, using their Duke NetID and password, as part of an ongoing pilot with Lynda.com.
Lynda.com offers more than 42,000 online training courses on topics ranging from Microsoft Excel and Adobe Creative Suite to Web design and computer programming.
More than 400 Duke staff, faculty and students have participated in the pilot in the past year, viewing more than 36,000 online video tutorials, said OIT training coordinator Christine Vucinich.
“We consistently had more than 100 people on the wait list for user accounts, so we worked to improve access,” Vucinich said. “We’re continuing to learn how Duke students, staff and faculty are using this tool and actively gathering usage data.”
The pilot will continue through June 2010.
Under the new system, Duke users can access Lynda.com tutorials from Duke or at home, using the Duke NetID authentication system. The new system will allow 30 users to access the tutorials at one time, with a limited number of dedicated user accounts also available for individual faculty and trainers.
In addition to Lynda.com, OIT Training is offering free e-learning courses in avariety of Microsoft applications, as part of Duke's new license agreement withMicrosoft.
