Duke names John Board associate chief information officer

September 7, 2007

John Board, associate professor and associate chair of electrical and  computer engineering at Duke, has been appointed associate chief  information officer, Duke Chief Information Officer Tracy Futhey  announced today.

Board will provide strategic leadership for the university’s  information technology environment through the collective resources  of the schools, departments and Duke’s information technology units.  He will divide his duties between the Pratt School of Engineering and  the CIO’s office.

“One of John’s primary responsibilities will be to champion the  innovative and appropriate use of information technology and provide  leadership in balancing needs and benefits against technical and  financial considerations,” Futhey said. “This supports Duke’s  commitment to innovation, part of our highest-order goals outlined in  Making a Difference, Duke’s strategic plan.”

Board’s new position is a Duke administrative-level appointment apart  from the Office of Information Technology (OIT), which Futhey also  oversees as vice president for information technology.  Board will  work closely with OIT and its senior management team and the faculty  and technical leadership of Duke’s schools and major units to ensure that IT needs are well understood, Futhey said.

Board earned a doctorate in theoretical physics from Oxford  University and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical  engineering from Duke. His research at Duke has focused on  distributed and parallel scientific computing. For the past three years, he has served as chair of Duke’s multidisciplinary Information  Technology Advisory Council.
