Wide-area pagers provide coverage within North and South Carolina, as well as within the hospitals and on the university campus. Extended southeast and nationwide coverage is also available. Duke provides wide-area paging in partnership with USA Mobility.
Although a variety of pager models are in circulation, all new wide-area pagers are alphanumeric, allowing users to receive text as well as numeric pages. A two-way alphanumeric pager is available to nationwide subscribers, which allows users to send, receive, and reply to pages.

Duke's local paging system is designed to deliver urgent pages to staff serving critical patient areas or functions. This system is available to Duke and Durham Regional Hospital, and provides coverage within and between both hospitals, with a range of approximately 15 miles from Duke campus.
All local, in-house pagers must be alphanumeric.
Visitor pagers can be purchased by departments to distribute to hospital visitors, such as family members of a patient who is in surgery. The pagers are coaster-style units like those used in restaurants and allow users to move about within the hospital, visit the cafeteria, etc. When a Duke staff member initiates a page to the visitor pager, the pager vibrates and lights to alert the family member to return to a designated area. These pagers require a charger, which servers up to 10 visitor pager units.
