iTunes U & Podcasting

Podcasting

Podcasting provides various ways to distribute audio or video programs over the Internet using a publisher/subscriber model. It's best used in a situation where you want users to elect to receive an ongoing series of published audio or video files.

If you are more interested in simply posting audio/video files to the Web or streaming audio/video for these reasons, please check DukeStream to see if it provides resources to better fill your needs.

About podcasting at Duke

Duke is a participating member of Apple's highly acclaimed iTunes U program, which contains useful built-in podcasting features.  iTunes U is a section of the iTunes Store dedicated to freely available academic content, and Duke's section of this repository is known as "Duke on iTunes U."  Instructors and departmental units at Duke can place content here for easy retrieval and attractive display.  Some areas of Duke on iTunes U are accessible to all users of the iTunes store via search and browsing, so your content here could potentially reach global audiences.  If you are interested in taking part in this project, please visit the iTunes U administrator page and follow the "getting started" steps. You can view the Duke on iTunes U site at itunes.duke.edu . Entering iTunes U requires that you have the free application iTunes installed.

OIT maintains a self-serve soundbooth at the American Tobacco Campus which can be used for recording audio podcasts.

Please see the Soundbooth FAQ for details.

DukeCast

On October 30th, 2009, the DukeCast service was decommissioned. The DukeCast podcasting service was established prior to our work with Apple to develop iTunes U, and since the launch of iTunes U, use of DukeCast has fallen off. For additional information on the DukeCast service, please contact the OIT Service Desk (help@duke.edu).
