DukeCapture

What is DukeCapture?

DukeCapture provides automated lecture and event capture at sites across the Duke campus. At the core of this program is a tool called Lectopia, a technology which allows for automatic publication to virtually any Duke delivery servers, including streaming and podcasting servers, Blackboard, and iTunes U.

Events can be captured in audio, video and VGA formats – or a combination of all three – and require no special technical expertise on the part of faculty or others being recorded.

Benefits of Lectopia include the following:

Low cost for schools and departments – A typical Lectopia installation costs approximately $5,900 per room, including a comprehensive three year support package (this figure excludes any needed A/V integration or upgrade costs). Please note that the institutional costs of Lectopia are greater, but that licensing arrangements, central servers and supporting applications, support fees, delivery servers, and other infrastructure costs are centrally supported by OIT.

Highly automated – The Lectopia server can be scheduled for a single lecture or for an entire semester at a time, eliminating the need for a technician to be present for classes.

Versatile – Lectopia can capture audio, video, and VGA in multiple combinations (VGA encompasses anything displayed on a presenter's computer screen, from basic PowerPoint slides to video and complex animations). Once captured, content is quickly be processed into a much wider range of platforms, formats, sizes and bandwidths than is available via any other lecture capture tool.

Manageable – Lectopia allows administrators to carefully control how the media is captured and delivered. A wide variety of reports can be generated to help administrators understand how content is being used.

Integration friendly – Lectopia has the ability to provide links which can be seen in BlackBoard and to upload content automatically to iTunes U.
